What is a CPV code?

CPV (Common Procurement Vocabulary) is the EU-derived classification system still used across UK public-sector procurement. Every contract notice on Find a Tender, Contracts Finder, Public Contracts Scotland, Sell2Wales and eTendersNI carries at least one CPV code, taxonomising the contract by what's being purchased. CPV codes are 8 digits — the first 2 are the top-level category (45 in total), with progressive specialisation in the remaining digits.
