We want to take forward a key recommendation from the Defra funded greenhouse gas (GHG) Measures project (B2068802-PAP-01) and recommendations in the UK Water Industry Research (UKWIR) Process Emissions Optimisation project that calls for a national programme to quantify wastewater process emissions along with greater coordination across the water industry to support far more accurate wastewater process emission estimates. Currently, the water industries own Carbon Accounting Workbook (CAW) v17 is judged to significantly underestimate GHG emissions and does not include wider emissions from sewerage, biosolids to land or nature-based solutions. We need a scoping project to better understand the costs (both capital and revenue/maintenance) and scale of the work required to create a national quantification programme that and helps develop a programme of work to improve the quantification of GHG emissions overall.
