Safety barrier projects form a key part of the capital highway improvements programme. In line with asset management, this project will enable a series of repairs and replacements to defective VRS assets. The programme supports our statutory duty to maintain the network, according to the Highways Act 1980. Assets at the end of their lifecycle or have been sufficiently damaged in Road Traffic Collisions will be programmed accordingly. Safety fencing reduces the severity of road collisions by effectively limiting the damage to the occupants of the vehicle(s) involved. It also protects the surrounding environment which includes buildings, road furniture, trees and embankments.
