We are seeking a design agency/artist/creative collective to lead the creation of a new major commission for summer 2025 at Kew Gardens, providing the must-see reason to visit Kew across the summer months.
The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (‘RBG Kew’) intends to appoint a Supplier for a period of up to 36 months with the option to extend by up to a further 6, from contract commencement in 2025. The Supplier will provide sequencing services primarily for the Fungarium Sequencing project, but also for other projects using fungal whole genome sequencing approaches.
The Fungarium Sequencing project at RBG Kew aims at whole genome sequencing several thousands of fungi from a combination of fresh samples and mostly historical/ancient dried fungarium collections. Samples are mostly reference type specimens with very low DNA yield. Library preparation requires ancient DNA protocols.
The Supplier will provide high-throughput sequencing data either from DNA extracts or from library preparations supplied by RBG Kew, according to the sequencing requirements below:
Promotional Film Production Services. RBG Kew estimates it will require approximately 12 promotional films that will be purposed for a range of channels including digital platforms, VOD, digital out of home and possibly cinema as well as outdoor screenings at our events. Variations in length (up to 30 seconds max) and format for each film will be required. Initial contract is 25 months with an approximate value of £120k (ex VAT). Option to extend by a further 23 months, maximum contract value is estimated at £250k (ex VAT)
The purpose of this procurement exercise is to develop a Framework Agreement of 3-6 approved production companies (Suppliers) that work with Kew Gardens and Wakehurst to deliver and contribute to our creative vision for our programmes. This procurement comprises two Lots: - Lot 1: Design & Fabricate – We will expect the Supplier to respond creatively to the Brief and use their design and inventive problem-solving expertise to develop playful, inviting, unique, innovative and aesthetically sensitive responses, and to then manufacture, install, maintain and deinstall all programme deliverables, as well as undertake all associated project management. - Lot 2: Fabricate Only – We will expect the Supplier to respond to a much more prescriptive Brief, and design practical solutions as required, and then manufacture, install, maintain and deinstall all programme deliverables, as well as undertake all associated project management.
Interpretation Services for Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (‘RBG, Kew’). These services include interpretation planning, research and content development and production
RBG Kew intends to procure a Supplier to carry out an ongoing visitor survey at both Kew Gardens and Wakehurst, to understand visitor profile and motivations and evaluate the visit experience in order to maintain a best-in-class experience. This includes survey review and management of the fieldwork, regular provision of data and KPI reporting, and bi-annual reporting to share key actionable insights and recommendations. The visitor survey is an existing and valuable resource for a wide range of teams across RBG Kew, helping the organisation to make data-driven decisions based on audience trends and visit feedback.
Develop the current Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew brand to authentically represent the mission and purpose of Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and strengthen our global position as a world-class science and conservation organisation in need of support.
The requirements are three-fold: extend our brand strategy, create a positioning strategy and deliver brand stories to help with the execution of this strategy.
Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew wishes to appoint a supplier to individually sequence the whole genomes of up to 300 European ash trees (Fraxinus excelsior) at a minimum of 15x whole genome coverage via a long-read technology. Fraxinus excelsior is a diploid and has a 1C genome size of 880 Mbp.
In addition to the 300 individual ash trees, we wish to sequence a minimum of six technical replicates. Therefore, the total number of samples we wish to sequence is 306.
RBG Kew intends to supply total genomic DNA for each sample with the following metrics: minimum of 10ug DNA; minimum concentration of 30ng/ml (as measured with a Quantus flurometer dsDNA assay); at least 50% of the sample in fragments with a minimum length of 40kb; minimum OD260/280 of 1.8; minimum OD260/230 of 1.8; minimum DIN of 7.
Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew are seeking a Planning Consultant for the New Herbarium Project. The project will provide a new world-class facilities for the safe storage, use and care of more than 7 million plant specimens from 250 years of collection and research. The proposed site for the new facility is located in Thames Valley Science Park within the Borough of Wokingham. The consultant will need to provide full planning consultancy services to support a successful planning application for the new building to gain the necessary consents. Submissions will need to provide evidence of their experience and knowledge of similar projects, including working with public sector clients and on projects with a construction value in excess of £100m.
We are seeking artists of all disciplines who can help make the invisible visible and communicate important themes selected by Wakehurst in a way that is tangible, engaging, relatable and inspiring for the general public. We are looking to commission between four and eight installations of different scales with budgets ranging from £5,000 to £30,000.
Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (‘RBG Kew') requires a supplier to deliver customisation of our existing e-commerce site hosted on Magento, who will be responsible for the hosting and ongoing support and maintenance.

The External Affairs & Engagement team is seeking to establish a small portfolio of high-quality catering suppliers capable of delivering exceptional service for high-profile events at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in west London. The requirement is to provide high-quality event catering at an affordable price in order to facilitate the growing popularity of private External Affairs and Engagement events. The team work with the Development & Strategic Events team (who sit in a separate Directorate) on the logistical planning of these events. The Development & Strategic Events team lead manages the relationship with catering suppliers.
The aim of this tender is to procure a supplier to manage the design and production of Kew magazine. The publication is produced three times per annum and forms part of the package of benefits for those who join Kew Garden membership scheme, of which there are approximately 80,000 memberships (or approximately 110,000 members). Delivered as a print product to approximately 80,000 households, Kew magazine is viewed as an important communication tool to inform members about the Gardens including our Wakehurst site, Kew’s scientific purpose, and what’s on for members to enjoy.

The fundamental client brief for the Learning Centre is to offer
new teaching spaces and facilities for learning but this is
qualified by the requirement for any new building delivered
within the current Kew masterplan to comply with the 2021-
2030 Manifesto for Change. This requires the building to
achieve the highest possible level of energy efficiency from the
building fabric and its services installation and for the
embodied carbon employed in the structure of the building to
be minimised and ideally repaid by the renewable energy
created by the building within its service lifespan.
