The project is tasked with the receipt of two flasks (the single module flask (SMF) and the neutron source container (NSC)) into an Active Handling Facility at NNL Windscale. The flasks will contain MOD reactor fuel for post irradiation examination (PIE).
Unlike most fuel received into the facility this fuel must be horizontally posted into the cave system. Such imports have not been undertaken for almost a decade and a new import
process is being developed. As part of the design process, fault identification has identified the need for an assessment of the possible impact of a fire on the operations being
undertaken.

A single supplier contract for the National Nuclear Laboratory to support the design, manufacture, testing, training and installation of a series of interconnected Gloveboxes.
NNL are seeking a single supplier to provide a Raman Microscope as detailed in the procurement specification. For further details please see the tender documents available.
National Nuclear Laboratory is seeking a single supplier to support surveying and research of the current Civil Nuclear Landscape on behalf of NIRO. This research has previously been conducted in house and an example of the previous year's output is available to view, however with the number of survey respondents increasing additional resource is required to undertake the surveying and reporting.
Option to extend a further beyond its initial period to allow a second survey and report to be produced in 2 years' time subject to funding being provided and satisfactory supplier performance.
Assistant Project Manager (APM) - the individual will support the PM in delivery of the HAWTT and Automated Stores projects for Sellafield Ltd.
Contract awarded under Crown Commercial Service Framework RM6165 - Lot 5 Defence.
Task 1 - Image Enhancement of Port Profiler Videos
Development of a software function to enhance the image quality of existing inspection videos. The
university will apply their existing image enhancement techniques (which were developed for a different
application) to existing videos. They will then evaluate the results and further develop the implementation of
the algorithms to make then suitable for use on the inspection videos.
Task 2 - Image Processing for Corrosion Detection in SPRS
Development of image processing techniques to automatically detect and quantify corrosion in inspection
videos of SPRS.

Procurement of Crawler components for incorporation into sludge retrieval system
Sellafield Ltd (SL) is currently in the process of emptying sludge from a series of tanks on the Sellafield site. This contract is for the procurement of ROV Crawler components for incorporation into sludge retrieval system is required to facilitate this task.
What is Included
The scope of this procurement exercise is the completion of the detailed design, manufacture and testing of the ventilation line for the SMF extract. The following activities associated with design of the SMF extract vent line are included in
this procurement specification:-
Project Start-up Meeting
Detailed Design
Design Review
Manufacture
Testing
Supply of design and manufacturing documentation including LTQR pack.
Design substantiation of the Vent Line, Vent Line Support Brackets, and any
connections to the Vent Line to Safety Function Class 2 in accordance with
SLP1.02.10.
The above listed project activities are to be carried out with the involvement of NNL. Regular update meetings will be required with the NNL project team and NNL's Lead Engineer is required to accept key project documentation. The supplier scope of supply shall begin from the specified interfaces in the Cave 6 garage area and end at the connection to the red extract. The supplier shall carryout an assessment
prior to commencement of design work to confirm that the discharge of these extracts from SMF operations in to the Red Extract ductwork will not adversely affect the existing Red Extract Ventilation System.
The supplier shall supply NNL with the following:-
Vent line (including replacement section of red extract duct work)
Brackets and fixings
Technical and manufacturing documentation including test certificates.
What is Optional
The following should be included in the suppliers tender return, with a separate price, as anoption that NNL may choose to pick up:
Installation of the SMF extract vent line and the replacement section of the red
extract duct work at the NNL Windscale Laboratory (also known as the Active
Handling Facility).
Non-active electrochemistry data for AGR cladding has been generated and modelling evaluation was carried
out by NPL, using the newly measured data to guide inputs, to predict susceptibility of the fuel cladding to SCC
in caustic conditions. Following these initial experiments, additional non-active testing has been carried out and
subsequent further modelling tasks and development have been recommended.
NPL will carry out the following Tasks:
• Investigation of the sensitivity of the modelling results (tip acidification and tip chloride accumulation) to the
transfer coefficient related to the cathodic reaction.
• Investigation of the sensitivity of the modelling results (tip acidification and tip chloride accumulation) to the
passive current density.
• Modify previous COMSOL simulation model of crack electrochemistry for advanced gas-cooled reactor
stainless steel cladding in pond storage to include the presence of boric acid.
• Modify the model to account for the dependency of the crack-tip current density on the local electrode
potential.
• Assess numerical convergence issues related to the very sharp change in electrode kinetics between the crack
walls and crack-tip and endeavour to resolve.
• NPL report containing the modifications to the previous model and example of results.
• Modify COMSOL model

There is a demand from Sellafield Limited to improve inspection of Special Nuclear Material (SNM) packages and
store infrastructure to ensure continued safe and secure storage. SL have issued two requests for quotation (RFQ)
to produce feasibility studies to examine / inspect SNM packages in two arrangements, ex-situ, and in-situ. For
each arrangement an optioneering exercise would be performed to identify potential inspection system solutions
and a down-selection to a preferred technology option. The scope of work for this contract will only cover the
arrangements for ex-situ, details of this are as follows:
• Investigate options to use existing concepts of the Automated Stores Project via existing Kuka tooling,
concepts for inspections buggy and temporary stores to implement a package inspection capability.
