Services to initiate and close membership sales to prospective members face-to-face, on site at Kew Gardens. RBG, Kew has a successful membership scheme with over 100,000 members on around 80,000 memberships. This is made up of around 20,000 new sales and 60,000 renewals each year. We have ambitious plans to double our membership over the coming five years and require a partnership with a face-to-face membership sales agency to support this ambition.

RBG Kew requires the provision of advanced analytical services to quantify fungicide residues in soil samples collected across England as part of the Natural Capital and Ecosystem Assessment (NCEA) programme. The work will involve the analysis of approximately 590 soil samples sourced from a range of land-use types, including agricultural fields, pasture land, improved grassland, and adjacent habitats potentially exposed to pesticide runoff. Control sites with minimal exposure will also be included to provide baseline comparisons.
• Sample preparation and extraction suitable for complex soil matrices.
• High-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) analysis to identify fungicides, transformation products, and metabolites at trace levels.
• Application of novel high-speed testing workflows and bespoke data analytics pipelines for accurate detection and interpretation of chemical residues.
• Delivery of comprehensive data outputs, including presence/absence reporting, concentration estimates, and identification of transformation products, in formats compatible with RBG Kew's research requirements.
• Implementation of robust quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) measures to ensure data integrity and reproducibility.

The BLF Madagascar is a large conservation research project being carried out in a designated priority country. The proposed consultancy supports capacity to meet with the primary mission of the project. This mission is to provide evidence-based recommendations to the Malagasy government for improving protected area management towards sustaining livelihoods of local communities, lowering biodiversity losses and reducing climate change impacts. Failure to rapidly recruit this consultant in the wake of the loss of our current coordinator will lead to a much lower chance of achieving the mission due the 6-month void that would occur through normal procurement with a further 3-month onboarding requirement for a project of this scale and complexity. This within a 24-month project window remaining.

The team considered what improvements to the Lower Nursery Glasshouse could be carried out to reduce the energy load without significantly disrupting operations. Proposed works include repairs to glass partitions and doors, infilling openings and overhauling the thermal blinds in each zone. It would be too disruptive to replace the existing heating pipes under the planting benches so these will be retained. On this basis, RBG Kew have also initiated a project to decarbonise the heating system serving the Lower Nursery and adjacent staff facilities and reduce their energy demand.

In the Jodrell Laboratory, two LNI Swiss Gas nitrogen generators supply high volumes of high purity nitrogen to four liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LCMS) systems (total value exceeding £1m). The LCMS systems are heavily used in the delivery of externally-funded projects and Kew's commercial work. Without nitrogen, the LCMS systems cannot be used. Thus, ensuring the nitrogen generators are properly maintained is critical. LNI Swiss Gas nitrogen generators employ patented scroll pump compressor technology and it is this technology that results in them being inaudible above the typical noise level in an LCMS laboratory. At the time of purchase, the tender process revealed they were unmatched in their quietness with noise level being an important specification in the tender (for H&S reasons). The generators also produce a purity of nitrogen gas that, at the time of procurement, exceeded that of other noisier generators tendered. The annual contract sought covers two preventative maintenance visits for each generator including parts scheduled to be replaced at the service interval, 25% discount on repair labour and 72h response time. Both generators are due for an overhaul of the scroll pump in 2026 resulting in an increased service contract cost in 2026 to cover the extra parts required.

The eight-toothed spruce bark beetle (Ips typographus) is an increasingly serious threat to spruce woodlands across Europe, including the UK. With climate change creating more favourable conditions for its spread, forestry managers must adopt proactive strategies to protect woodland health. One of the most effective approaches is the pre-emptive felling of vulnerable spruce trees.

The requirement is for a Hovermap LiDAR system that will increase capability for measuring trees, woodlands and hedgerows. Combining LiDAR and hovermap technology captures millimetre-accurate 3D scans of whole trees, enabling non-destructive estimates of volume, biomass, and carbon with significantly reduced uncertainty compared to traditional allometric methods. This high-resolution data supports more reliable greenhouse gas reporting and enhances the evaluation of nature-based solutions.
