The West Midlands Travel App (WMTA) Project aims to replace our current fragmented transport information with a simple, trusted, and dependable digital solution. Acting for its customers, Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) seeks a unified platform that simplifies the end-to-end customer experience for journey planning and mobile ticketing. By providing intelligent journey planning, accurate live updates, and easy mobile ticketing, the solution supports TfWM’s strategic objective to increase the use of public transport. This initiative is a foundational step towards delivering a cohesive and modern transport network, supporting bus franchising goals and our Local Transport Plan. The platform's ability to be a reliable, day-to-day tool for customers will allow TfWM to capture more valuable insights into customer behaviour, thereby supporting future enhancements and investment.
A journey planning solution is required to provide customers with comprehensive, real-time, and multi-modal journey planning information. It shall include search filtering options that enable customers to identify journeys that best meet their needs, including accessible journey options.
The mobile ticketing solution will provide a backend solution (MTBS) that must securely manage all core ticketing system functions. It will serve as the backend system for ticketing lifecycles, payment processing, customer accounts and configurable commercial logic. The MTBS will handle all the critical account, product, ticketing, payment and support functions that are utilised by customers through TfWM apps and websites, with the ability to be expanded into other retail channels.
The app will be TfWM’s primary customer-facing solution, providing a seamless and secure experience for customers to plan their journeys and purchase products on iOS and Android devices. These functions will be supported by additional features such as account management (personal details, payment details, communication preferences), help & support, and access to additional travel related information. The new mobile app shall support all features and capabilities of journey planning and mobile ticketing as outlined in the specification and requirements documents.
