Northumbria University requires upgrade and replacement of X-ray detection hardware and software for existing Tescan Mira 3GM SEM. Updating the detectors with the last generation sensors will ensure future support and repairability in the next 10 years. This contract covers the provision of high-resolution X-ray detectors (EDS), integrated signal processing electronics, and the associated proprietary software suite. The procurement is a technical upgrade to the existing Tescan Mira 3GM Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). It ensures the replacement of obsolete components with current-generation technology to maintain the instrument’s analytical capabilities and structural integrity.
Proprietary Integration: The existing Tescan Mira 3GM architecture uses a specific interface and software kernel owned by Oxford Instruments. Only Oxford Instruments can provide detectors that are natively compatible with this system without requiring unverified and high-risk modifications to the microscope's vacuum chamber and electronic bus.

Northumbria University has procured a Micro Compounder, an Injection Moulder and a Platen Press to support advanced research into novel nanocomposites-materials that combine nanoscale fillers with polymer matrices to achieve enhanced physical properties.
- The Micro Compounder that capable of processing very small quantities of polymers and additives, ideal for R&D involving expensive or rare substances;
- The Injection Moulder that allows for the creation of standardised test specimens with tight control over temperature, pressure, and mould geometry;
- The Platen Press that offers programmable pressure and heat settings to form composite sheets or layered samples.
The machines will be used in conjunction with each other and physically compatible for a single user to operate. The transfer of samples from a Micro Compounder to either Platen press or Injection Moulder is achievable with minimal user intervention and without requiring any additional tools or adaptors.
Following a competitive tender, the requirement was split to ensure technical compliance. Items 1 & 2 were awarded to the UK distributor, while Item 3 was awarded directly to the OEM as the sole authorized provider for that specific item. This purchase includes delivery; offloading; positioning; installation; commissioning; onsite training and 2-year Service and Maintenance contract.

The University is completing the build of three 6U CubeSats as part of a technology demonstration mission funded by the UK Space Agency. This mission will see the launch of two 6U CubeSats into a sun-synchronous Low Earth Orbit (expected 450 km altitude) in 2026/7. The third 6U CubeSat is our reference model. The payload being developed for assembly integration and testing within the 6U CubeSat bus is a 2U laser communications terminal. The mission goal will be to demonstrate inter-satellite laser optical communications across a range of link lengths up to 1000 km and at least 1 Gbps data transfer rates between the 6U CubeSats. There will be a requirement for a number of ground-passes for frequent data downlink of the experimental results log files and the mission is anticipated to last for 1 year, including a deorbit final stage.

The University wishes to create a new thin film magnetron sputtering facility for the fabrication of energy materials, biocompatible and functional coatings. TF-FAB provides a platform for researchers to develop new inorganic thin films for energy materials, biocompatible and functional coatings. It supports unprecedented recent growth in thin film research at Northumbria University (NU). TF-FAB provides a transformational capacity increase in thin film fabrication and will create new collaborative opportunities between academia and industry. We are looking for a dual chamber sputtering system and interconnecting load lock.
We are looking for maximum flexibility (hardware and software) and also an upgradable system. We anticipate that one chamber will be more geared towards the deposition of oxide and compound materials (chamber 1) while the other would be more metal focus, including diamond like carbon coatings and titanium based alloys (chamber 2).
