Pharmaceutical services involves services that are ordinarily and customarily rendered by a pharmacy or pharmacist, including the preparation and dispensing of pharmaceutical products. These services are essential to ensure the health and wellbeing of the population can be maintained and improved.
The contracted provisions aim to:
- Provide an inpatient, outpatient and discharge dispensing service which is safe, effective, and conducted by certified suppliers on a trust site(s) or via a remote hub.
- Provide multi-compartment compliance aids (MCA) assembly and delivery service, for inpatients, outpatients or home delivery patients, to help and guide patients in ensuring they take their medication on the correct day and time.
- Effectively provide the delivery of stock pharmaceutical products to the contracting authority in pre-assembled containers for defined ward locations, ready for onward delivery within the hospital.
- Provide fully trained and competent staff to perform their duties in accordance with the requirements of the service.
- Appropriate reporting of services needed to assist in the reporting to commissioners if appropriate.
The ULHT Contract for the outpatient dispensing services based at Lincoln County Hospital and Pilgrim Hospital Boston, and the additional preparation and coordination of to facilitate dispensing on site, to support with home delivery of outpatient prescriptions, which is currently being managed and delivered by the Trust's Fleet Services.
The Contract is for an initial 5 years with the option to extend for a further 1 + 1 year/s. Total contract duration could be 7 years.

The purpose of scalp cooling is to reduce a person's hair loss during chemotherapy treatment. By cooling the scalp, the blood flow to this area reduces meaning that less blood containing the chemotherapy drugs reaches the hair follicles. Scalp cooling is a clinically proven treatment and an effective solution to combat chemotherapy induced alopecia. A scalp cooling service is expected to be offered where appropriate, to patients who meet the criteria of receiving certain chemotherapy treatments, this is supported by national guidelines as well as recommended by Macmillan Cancer.
