Integrated bioreactor platform for rapid scale-up and translation
This tender is being run on behalf of Dr James Winterburn, Reader in Chemical Engineering. Dr Winterburn led a successful BBSRC ALERT21 equipment bid "Integrated bioreactor platform for rapid scale-up and translation", which will provide significant bioreactor capacity for microbial fermentation process development, scale up and translation for a range of bio-based chemicals. The exploitation of bio-based production routes requires a thorough understanding of production strain performance and an ability to rapidly and effectively scale processes from millilitres to tens of litres. The bioreactor platform is intended to provide understanding of how process conditions at different volumes and variability across process parameters (e.g., mixing speeds, dissolved O2, pH), affect host cell performance. The integrated bioreactor platform will bridge across three scales, outlined below, and allow for rapid process development and ultimately support research translation.
Small-scale: Parallel bioreactor system (500 mL, 6 vessels) for rapid parallel process development, strain testing and parameter optimization for microbial fermentations in batch, fed-batch and continuous cultivation, with off gas analysis capability
Mid-scale (3L bioreactor system, four vessels): For initial scale up and process development work (e.g., confirmation of feeding profiles, metabolic profiling) and preliminary process analysis (including; yield, productivity, final titre) with off gas analysis capability. Also serves as the seed train for inoculum preparation for scale up to 40L.
Large-scale feasibility (40L SIP bioreactor): To enable in-house demonstration of process technical feasibility, production of sufficient quantities of material for application testing and benchmarking and provision of data for robust techno-economic analysis which can be used as the basis for commercialisation, also with off gas analysis capability.

The Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics is the astronomical research centre of The University of Manchester and operates e-MERLIN, the UK's national radio astronomy facility. Jodrell Bank was awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 2019, and the consultant needs to be aware of the heritage status of the site. Jodrell Bank is a world leader in radio astronomy-related research and technology development but also carries out research across the electromagnetic spectrum and in theoretical topics.
A LAN Switch Refresh project has been progressed for the main buildings however the circa 60 3rd party unmanaged switches that are connected to single data ports within the buildings will not be replaced. There is a mixture of 5, 8, 12, 16, 24 & 32 port switches on and under desks, in cupboards, equipment racks etc. This situation is a concern from a security, management, network connectivity and process perspective. Moving to a Wi-Fi only option is not possible due to the sensitive nature of the radio telescopes. However, there may be a requirement for occasional Wi-Fi hotspots for guests and events.
A range of options have been considered for Network Modernisation, and a preferred option identified. This involves removing all the 3rd party unmanaged switches and running additional data cables to the location of the existing comms cabinets. This will bring Jodrell Bank in line with the rest of the University's modernized network, removing old equipment, improving network stability, an enabling monitoring of all areas of the network.
The upgrade is of high importance, with the works aimed to be completed by Spring 24.
We wish to engage an external partner with proven expertise in the field of information security and data protection to support us in preparing a gap analysis, implementation and achieving readiness for an ISMS across the University, based on ISO27001, ISO27701 & BS10012 information security and privacy frameworks. This will require the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and standards consistent with the requirement of a mature ISMS. This agreement would be based on a 2 year term subject to satisfactory performance
The University of Manchester no longer meets the criteria of a 'body governed by public law' and is therefore not considered a contracting authority for the purposes of the Public Contracts Regulations 2015 and/or any replacement legislation. As a result, the University of Manchester will no longer be subject to the regime contained in The Public Contracts Regulations 2015 and/or any replacement legislation with effect from 1 August 2023. However, as an institution founded for the public good, an exempt charity and an organization in receipt of public funds, the University has a duty to manage expenditure in an appropriate manner and aims to deliver value for money across its non-pay spend by adhering to good procurement practice.'

Digital Notebooks and Sample Inventories - Request for Information
The University is undertaking a project to improve the experience of academic staff and postgraduate research students when managing research data. A review of the research software landscape highlighted disparities in researchers' ability to access digital tools to coordinate experimental metadata and data with minimal friction. As part of this project, it has been identified that it would be beneficial to conduct soft market testing to ascertain the offerings around digital notebooks and associated sample inventories within the market, along with any key areas of development within recent years.
