The Satellite Applications Catapult is seeking a suitable provider to supply a motion tracking and control system for industrial robots. The system must track multiple objects to sub-millimetre accuracy at frame rates up to 300Hz, record & report the results to an appropriate database and feedback updated target coordinates & orientations to robot controllers. It is anticipated that the total volume to be tracked is 25m x 18m x 6m. Software APIs to allow connection to other systems should be included as part of the costs. This includes integration to the Catapult’s robot systems (via ROS nodes) to allow near real-time updating of programmed positions and trajectories. It is expected that this would operate in a closed loop fashion where the reported position is analysed against the intended and commands sent to the robots to adjust their position. The tenderer should include for all necessary hardware, software licenses, installation, and training costs.
The Satellite Applications Catapult is seeking a suitable provider to develop its existing Vicon motion tracking system. The aim is to integrate the existing system into the Catapult’s robot systems via ROS nodes to allow near real-time updating of programmed positions and trajectories. It is expected that this would be a closed loop where the reported position is analysed against intended & commands sent to the robots adjusting their position. The existing system consist of 34 Vicon Vero 2.2 cameras and Vicon Tracker v 1.1.0 software. The system must track multiple objects to sub-millimetre accuracy at frame rates up to 300Hz, record the results in a database and feedback updated target coordinates/orientations to robot controllers. The total tracked volume is 27m x 7m x 8m. Software APIs to allow connection to other systems should be included as part of the costs. The tenderer should include for all necessary hardware, software licenses, installation, and training costs.
The Satellite Applications Catapult is seeking a supplier to provide a safety system for an expanded robotics facility at its Westcott facility. The safety system is essential to ensure that Catapult staff and clients are kept safe at all times. The facility will be a multi-robot system (including automated mobile robots and potentially a gantry system) housed in an area of 23m x 14m. The system must interface with all robots, be flexible enough to allow for their re-positioning in the facility as projects demand and control access to the robot area. The intention is for the updated facility to be a fully enclosed space with partition walls forming the safety barrier and dark room environment. Access to this area is intended to be controlled by the safety system from a central control room location and will include one roller shutter door, two double doors and one fire escape. It will be necessary to operate the robots in a lights-out environment with CCTV monitoring of the area.
Full scale model of International Space Station Columbus module
The Satellite Applications Catapult is seeking a suitable provider to build a full-scale model of a space station module. The model will be used as part of the Catapult’s IOSM facility to evaluate robotics, tools, and techniques. The model is to be cylindrical and be 8m long and 4m diameter. It should be mounted on a suitable transport jig to allow movement around the facility to suit the needs of projects. This jig should include a method of locking it in place for test campaigns. The model should feature a framework suitable for mounting robots up to 30kg in weight externally and internally. Internally this framework should provide a 2.5m wide x 2.5m high working space within the model and allow the fitting of standard equipment racks based on the International Standard Payload Rack format. This should include a floor structure suitable for human operators. Externally the model should feature removable panels with suitable mounting points for equipment to be fitted as required.
The Satellite Applications Catapult is seeking a suitable provider to develop an automated orbital lighting system for is IOSM Facility. The system will be installed in the facilities dark room measuring 27m x 7m x 8m and contains robot systems to mimic spacecraft flight. It is expected to replicate orbital lighting conditions that accurately represent the lighting environment spacecraft will experience. As such, the system is expected to move light sources to replicate the effect of light emitting bodies (eg the sun) on spacecraft. Due to existing equipment mounted in the facility it is expected that the lighting system will be mounted to the walls or above (ceiling mounting is not possible). Movement of light sources is expected to be automated and programmable, ideally in coordination with the existing KUKA robots via ROS nodes. Light sources are to be included suitable to mimic sunlight encountered in orbit (approx. 6900 Kelvin). Light sources to be low weight & energy efficient.
The Satellite Applications Catapult is seeking a suitable provider to industrial robotics to support the development of its IOSM Robotics facility at Westcott Venture Park. The equipment covered under this notice form part of a larger program of works to increase the capacity and capability of the existing facility. It is intended that the equipment procured will complement existing equipment and therefore the supplier will be required to show how this will be achieved.
The Satellite Applications Catapult is seeking a suitable provider to an overhead gantry system that will enable simulation of orbital environments by off-loading the effect of gravity on a suspended object. The system provided will installed in a new Catapult facility and will cover an area of 15m x 15m x 7m (lxwxh) and capable of carrying a 200kg payload. The system will be required to suspend objects in a free-floating manner but be able to move the object in any direction when a force is applied to it, thus simulating the in-orbit dynamics experienced during contact between space craft. As such, 6 degrees of freedom are required at the attachment point. The system will need to utilise its own control system to enable this, but it must be possible to provide force, position, and trajectory data to external systems in a suitable format for data processing and control of other systems. Installation & commissioning of the system is to be included by the supplier.

Positioning, Orientation and Timing for Assets in Space using GNSS-Like Signals
The Satellite Applications Catapult is seeking a suitable provider to perform simulated analysis of a GNSS-like system for the position determination of assets in space, as well as timing, phase and frequency transfer. Comparison to existing GNSS constellations (GPS, Galileo, etc.) is to be carried out.
Analysis will also be carried out on the effects of the use of different frequencies, as well as transmitter power and separation.
Simulation files created by the provider will be delivered to the Satellite Applications Catapult alongside documentation detailing the results, and instructions allowing the work to be carried forward.
Drone Test and Development Centre Operating Systems
The Satellite Applications Catapult (SAC) in partnership with the Buckinghamshire Local Enterprise Partnership (Bucks LEP) have invested in the development of a Drone Test and Development Centre (DTDC). This dedicated facility located on the Westcott Venture Park comprising of a set of drone workshops and hangars, 270 metres of horizonal or vertical take-off runway and four dedicated drone VTOL UAS pads, became operational in 2023.
The facility provides the ground infrastructure for Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) operations and onward development of UAS and their associated technology, and now requires the deployment of dedicated management information systems to govern its airspace and to ensure safe operation in a complex operating environment.
