Severn Trent Water (STW) serves over eight million people in the heart of the UK, supplying nearly
over eight million people in the heart of the UK, supplying nearly two billion litres of drinking
water a day to the highest standards in Europe. STW takes away used water, treats it at over 1,000 sewage works and puts it safely back into rivers and streams.
Bioresources within STW operates currently 25 sludge treatment facilities across the whole STW region. These treatment facilities process 260,000 tonnes of dry solids produced by the wastewater treatment process.
STW is required to treat and safely dispose of this material as part of our undertaking. All sludge treatment facilities use anaerobic digestion to convert organic matter from sludge into renewable energy and biosolids.
In order to enhance our capacity to treat sludge and meet sludge volume increases in the most efficient way, STW intends to procure a Thermal Hydraulic Process (THP) system for the treatment of surplus sludge from our site at Netheridge. Netheridge is STW's largest treatment works in the south region. It is located to the south of Gloucester and is bounded by the River Severn to the west and the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal to the east. The site can treat up to 42.8ml a day (dry weather flow) and currently serves a population of roughly 200k. At current processing rates, sludge processing in the region is due to hit capacity by 2030, which is one of the key drivers for this upgrade.
STW intends to procure a thermal hydrolysis process (THP) solution meeting the following requirements for Netheridge:
- Have a minimum design life of 20 years
- Be designed for average sludge composition in feed to the thermal hydrolysis system, which is anticipated to be 37% primary sludge, 63% secondary sludge.
- Be able to cope with Annual Design Solids load to hydrolysis system of 16,081 tDS/year
- Be able to cope with Peak daily sludge load to hydrolysis system of 51.0 tDS/d
- The thermal hydrolysis process shall achieve a minimum 6-log kill of indicator organisms (E coli).
- The design of the hydrolysis process shall include for energy recovery systems so as to minimise energy consumption where practicable.
The scope of this procurement is expected to include:
- Supply of appropriate THP solution for Netheridge
- Delivery (Delivery of the units is required on site by early 2027)
- Installation / Installation support (complete by mid 2027)
- Commissioning (complete by end 2027)
- Operator Training
- Maintenance provisions
The THP will have to comply with all relevant Statutory Regulations (DSEAR, PSR, PSSR, PUWER and all UK and Harmonised EU suite of regs.) as well as all relevant STW Specifications and Design Manual requirements unless exemptions are sought and instructed.
The supplier for the THPs will need to liaise with both STW and STW's nominated contractor for the site to collaborate with regards to site specific requirements, supporting the programme timeline, asset installation and commissioning.
If you are interested in this opportunity and capable of meeting the requirements set out in the scope, please email Danyaal.memi@severntrent.co.uk with copy to AdvancedProcurement@severntrent.co.uk by 15th June 2025, 17:0 hours (BST), setting out your company details and providing a case study of your technology's successful installation and operation on a sewage treatment plant.

Severn Trent Water (STW) currently have five operational Gas to Grid Plants at Minworth, Minworth 2, Strongford, Finham, & Stoke Bardolph 2.
This tender covers the sampling of the Biomethane Gas that is produced that
- Complies with UK Gas regulations and assuring quality of gas.
- Confirms that the gas scrubbing filtration system is working correctly and will act as a warning when the filtration system requires replacing.
- Confirms that the liquid commercial waste brought onto the site for digestion from external sources is not contaminated with unacceptable substances, which affect STW processes and the Biomethane that is produced.

My name is Dagmara Persa, Category Manager at Severn Trent and I'm currently conducting a market engagement exercise to better understand the capabilities and interest of leading suppliers in the Building Maintenance sector. We are exploring the potential development of a framework agreement for building maintenance services for a water utility based in the Midlands. While no formal tender has been launched yet, we anticipate an annual spend of approximately £9 million, with multiple suppliers expected to be appointed to the framework. This exercise is purely for market engagement purposes and does not constitute any part of a formal procurement process. Your insights will help us shape the scope and strategy for future tender. If you are interested in participating, please reply with the relevant information.
We invite suppliers to engage with us ahead of a potential tender for Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) chambers. This early engagement aims to help shape a sourcing strategy and procurement process that not only meets our technical and commercial requirements but is also accessible and appropriate for a broad range of suppliers.
Participation in this pre-market engagement is entirely optional. Suppliers who choose to engage will neither be advantaged nor disadvantaged in any future tendering process. Any subsequent tender opportunities will be published in accordance with standard procurement procedures.
If you are interested in participating, please use the following link to complete the pre-market engagement form:

Market Engagement for PPE & RPE Tender covering PPE, Workwear and RPE for ST & HD.
Both core and non-core PPE items and specialist Respiratory equipment
Microsoft form available to be completed for initial details
Active gas capture is one of the Severn Trent net-zero enhancement investment solutions for reducing Bioresources methane emissions during AMP8. To meet our regulatory commitments on operational emissions reduction, we are seeking technological solutions that enhance the methane recovery potential of anaerobic digestion plants. Specifically, we are looking to the market for technologies such as vacuum degassing that target the removal of residual biogas, entrained or dissolved in liquid digestate, reducing subsequent downstream methane emissions to atmosphere.
We would be looking for supply, installation & commissioning of such solution across various Severn Trent Water sites (likely to be required on site from 2027 onwards). Training, Operations & Maintenance may also be required (but to be determined at a later stage following further discussions). Preliminary discussions indicate that c.18 sites may require an active gas capture solution.
The following requirements state our performance and site integration expectations and standards compliance for a proven technological solution which removes biogas from digested sludge via degassing or other:
GENERAL:
- A complete containerised or roof-covered solution that removes and captures biogas (dissolved and entrained in microbubbles) from within the solid and liquid matrix of digested sludge.
- A solution which recovers the captured biogas into an existing biogas collection system or other beneficial-use outlet.
SAFE SYSTEM INTEGRATION:
- Integrates with the outlet of an existing digester(s) or covered post digestion tank(s)
- Integrates into the existing biogas collection pipework
- Integrates into the existing site SCADA systems
- Meets all requirements of the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR) and the Severn Trent Potentially Explosive Atmospheres Design Manual and Specification (ME37-Potentially Explosive Atmospheres), including details on explosion protection.
TECHNOLOGY READINESS LEVEL (TRL):
- At TRL 8 or above
CASE STUDIES / INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE:
- Able to provide at least one case study specific to trials / installations recovering biogas from digested sewage sludge or material with similar properties
HARDWARE & SOFTWARE:
- Compliance with Severn Trent mandated supply frameworks, some components may require replacement to Severn Trent approved framework suppliers (further details of impacted components to be provided by Severn Trent at a later stage).
- Hardwired interlocks for gas-related DSEAR safety.
EMISSIONS MONITORING:
- Internal capability or compatibility with monitoring equipment measuring the concentration and flowrate of biogas, methane and oxygen
ENGINEERING STANDARDS:
- The complete system and its components developed to European (EN) / British or equivalent / Water Industry Specification / Severn Trent engineering standards, with suppliers to advise of any potential asset standard deviations known at this stage.
Interested Suppliers are requested to complete the below form ahead of the proposed engagement deadline of 7th November 2025:
