In 2022 the Government introduced a new mandatory training requirement for all health and care staff working in regulated services; it is about improving support for people with learning disabilities and autistic people. The training is often associated with a young man named Oliver McGowan, whose death further highlighted the ongoing need for better training for health and social care staff. The intention is to help staff to understand the needs of people with learning disabilities and autistic people and how to provide them with safe, compassionate and informed care.

The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training (https://www.hee.nhs.uk/our-work/learning-disability/current-projects/oliver-mcgowan-mandatory-training-learning-disability-autism) is an important step in achieving this goal.
