Weyside Urban Village - Reptile Translocation - AWARD
The reptile translocation is being undertaken to enable the Weyside Urban Village (WUV) development to progress. Planning permission for the WUV hybrid application was secured in March 2022. An initial reptile translocation was carried out in 2023, however due to delays to the development and lack of area management, GBC requires a further translocation exercise to take place. See Technical Note prepared by Stantec dated June 25 ' WUV Phase 1 Reptile Translocation 2023 and Summary of Management Measures & Monitoring 2025'. This Technical note provides a summary of the works undertaken to date and the condition of the Phase 1 Reptile Translocation Site in May 2025.
The reptile translocation area primarily lies within the Phase 1 Development Area of WUV on the site of an area of former allotments (Bellfields Allotments) and is referred to in this note as the "Phase 1 Reptile Translocation Site" for ease of reference, albeit some parts of the translocation site fall within adjacent subsequent phases of the WUV development. The area of Bellfields Allotments, within the "Phase 1 Reptile Translocation Site" was transferred from Guildford Allotment Society (GAS) to Guilford Borough Council ownership in April 2023. Note that at the time of writing this specification, Winvic have access to the southern end of the site as part of a site compound. Access to the site will need to be agreed by the Contractor with Winvic,
External funding has been approved for up to £145,000 for the installation of pool covers which will result in significant financial savings through saving mainly on utility costs but also chemical and water consumption. These savings will enable the pool to be operated all year round which therefore increases the leisure provision for residents.
The installation of these covers will also contribute to the Council's environmental initiatives. A significant amount of investigatory work has also been undertaken in respect of benchmarking the chosen pool cover type, including how it will used and operated in practical terms over the coming years.
