ECITB is pleased to invite stakeholders to help shape it's new STEM engagement programme! The Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB) is inviting organisations to get involved in helping shape a new programme designed to support the engineering construction industry's future talent pipeline. Andrew Hockey, CEO of the ECITB, said: "The ECITB's Leading Industry Learning Strategy outlines the importance of encouraging new entrants into industry and engaging in activities to attract and inspire under-16s into ECI careers. "One of the recurring themes we hear from employers across the industry is the critical need to inspire young people into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) careers from an early age. "Our Business Plan for 2026 includes the action to deliver a key EDI (equity, diversity and inclusion) or attraction initiative in each ECITB region, including a STEM outreach engagement activity in Central Scotland targeting secondary schools." As part of its pre-tender market engagement, the ECITB is seeking input on the current STEM engagement landscape from engineering construction organisations, STEM outreach providers and third sector partners. Feedback is welcomed on existing solutions, areas of good practice and any gaps that need to be addressed to strengthen STEM outreach and careers awareness. Our webinar will be the first in a series of supplier engagement activities to support this, pre tender. The ECITB intends to issue a tender later in summer 2026 for the two-year pilot programme across the Scottish Central Belt, with delivery expected to commence in 2027. WEBINAR Organisations interested in contributing to this early engagement are invited to attend our online event on 20 April at 11:0am. Insights gathered during this engagement will help inform the forthcoming tender and pilot programme. Following our previous Market Engagement notice CITB is now ready to proceed with the England Construction Opportunities tender. CITB requires several suppliers to further develop construction employment opportunities in England through a new commission called, the England Construction Opportunities (ECO), that supports new entrants into the construction industry. The budget for this commission is £1.82m over 3 years with no capital expenditure. The specific criteria in the tender will focus on the support provided in the workplace through job coaching, mentoring, employer engagement, peer and buddy systems or other appropriate support measures to improve the quality and sustainability of work outcomes. This support will be reviewed at 3 and 6 months sustained employment outputs with destination tracking of individuals through a 12-month cycle to evidence outcomes of the support. The commission will require providers to have in place pre-existing relationships with other agencies to manage the training and development required for an individual to become employment and site ready to enter a construction job. The commission is looking to award to a mix of providers; 2-3 small providers and 3-4 larger providers. An introductory webinar to the tender and application process will be held, details below and on our website at www.citb.co.uk. CITB are inviting bids from the construction industry to create a model of local, onsite work experience and training to help address the recruitment and skills challenges facing the sector in the Thames Valley Berkshire and London LEP areas. CITB have allocated £1.2 million to establish Onsite Experience hubs within these two LEP areas (£600,000 in each area). The primary objective of this commission is to deliver ‘onsite experiences’ to enable individuals to become employment and site-ready, before progressing at least 50% of these people into sustained employment for a minimum of three months. Research tells us that in order to get a new recruit to a desired initial standard of site-readiness, employers often need to devote significant time and resource to achieving this, regardless of the recruit's entry route into the sector or previous experience. Onsite Experience hubs will equip individuals to become employment and site-ready to employer specifications, before they are recruited, providing candidates with support including employability training, short duration construction training, PPE, CSCS cards and work experience, and therefore reducing the resource burden and risk for recruiting businesses. This commission addresses the challenge by funding pre-employment training, and an onsite experience which can be treated as a work trial by the employer, prior to committing to employing a new recruit. An online briefing and supplier engagement event will be hosted by the CITB Commissioner (via MS Teams) on Monday 6th June 2022, 11am to 12:30pm. To join this event, please use the following link on the above date and time: https://teams.microsoft.com/l/meetup-join/19%3ameeting_NWQzMzM5YWUtNDYyMC00ZTI5LWIwMzMtNjY4MmYyNGMwZThk%40thread.v2/0?context=%7b%22Tid%22%3a%22e32fcdb1-bebe-44eb-be1c-ef4700387163%22%2c%22Oid%22%3a%22ae3416f1-9d4e-413c-a32e-a8218a113a62%22%2c%22IsBroadcastMeeting%22%3atrue%7d&btype=a&role=a Interested suppliers will need to access the opportunity on Delta (they may need to register): https://www.delta-esourcing.com/

CITB has a commercial need to better support individuals when entering into construction jobs to ensure sustained employment in the industry. Previous commissions have shown that new entrants require more assistance in the workplace than just construction training. This tender is looking to commission this additional support for the first year of the new entrants' journey.

In December 2024, the government published its plan for increasing the pace of remediation for buildings in England with unsafe cladding. In response to this, CITB has been working with employers, Government and other stakeholders to put in place updated training for the inspection and installation of facades that meet fire safety standards required by the Building Safety Act. CITB have produced the training standards required for supervisors and installers in the Rainscreen Façade Systems sector that will support training providers to deliver rainscreen facades training programmes on site to operatives and supervisors working on live projects. This commission will focus on the delivery of a pilot for the testing and delivery of the five short duration training standards across England, Scotland and Wales. There will be four rainscreen façade systems short duration courses to existing rainscreen façade systems installers and one upskilling course for supervisors.

The GIRI (Get It Right Initiative) Training commission is to support and enable around three to four employers to become GIRI Approved Training Providers thus equipping appropriate internal trainers with the skills, knowledge and tools to deliver GIRI accredited training to approximately 2,500 individuals within their own workforce and supply chain. The commission will also provide an opportunity to generate and collect evidence of the benefits of the training in terms of the impact on the productivity and cost and frequency of error on projects and organisations. GIRIs accredited training scheme directly targets the root causes of error and empowers companies, project teams, and individuals to get it right first time. GIRI courses enable employees to develop the right skills to collaboratively understand, pre-empt and avoid error in their daily work. The three streams of training are: 1) Leadership training - Strategies to eliminate error, for leaders of organisations and leaders of construction projects 2) Training across interfaces - Techniques to avoid interface errors in design and construction, for managers and designers 3) Supervisory and management skills - Supervision and planning skills to prevent errors during construction, for site supervisors and managers. CITB and GIRI will be holding a tender launch webinar on Tuesday 12th September at 10.00am to explain the commission and answer any questions.
