Remote electronic monitoring (REM), which uses cameras and sensors on a vessel to collect data on fishing activities, is an effective tool for scientific data collection and monitoring. Cefas use REM to support several research and development projects that collect information on catch, discards, and sensitive species bycatch. As the use of REM in monitoring UK fisheries increases, Cefas are looking to the market to understand what technologies and methods are available for generating quality assured data on fishing activity and sensitive species bycatch. We are interested to know more about outsourcing analysis of data, where systems are already installed on vessels, as well as what other, more comprehensive options might be available, which could include taking responsibility for system installation, maintenance, analysis and data provision.

The BEEMS (British EDF Estuarine and Marine Studies) programme is funded by NNB Generation Company (HPC) Limited. Through this programme, Cefas provide authoritative scientific information on the marine and transitional waters in the vicinity of potential new build nuclear power stations. Cefas require a supplier to conduct intertidal Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) flights, in accordance with the civil Aviation Authority (CAA) guidelines, to monitor potential coastal change and intertidal algal coverage for the Hinkley Point C (HPC) Nuclear New Build project to meet regulatory environmental monitoring requirements. RPA flights and photography are required: (1) along the Hinkley Point foreshore, and; (2) at Combwich Wharf and the surrounding banks of the River Parrett.

The purpose of this PIN is to notify the market of an upcoming tender opportunity (subject to Business Case approval) for the provision of a Research Vessel (RV) to the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas). <br/> This RV will replace the existing RV Cefas Endeavour that is reaching the end of its operational life and is critical to enabling Cefas to collect scientific data at sea and which can transform the way our seas are monitored by embracing new technologies for data collection and by providing next generation capability to progress our commitments to net zero. Cefas wishes to engage a suitably qualified and experienced shipyard for the design and build of a new Research Vessel which is specifically tailored to meet Cefas’ marine and fisheries scientific requirements and be capable of technological update over a service life of 30 years minimum.
