DPAYG TrialsRequest for Proposals (RFP) for the provision of technical suppliers to support the potential development of
Digital PAYG trials on rail during 2025 and 2026.
Rail Delivery Group acting through ATOC Limited (ATOC) and working in conjunction with partners
including GBRTT, DfT, and train operating companies, is seeking proposals to support the development of
plans to run several DPAYG trails, involving a range of different suppliers and train operating companies
(TOCs) during 2025 and 2026. Trials will have fixed end dates, be delivered to a closed user group, and
run for a 9-month duration.
We expect the trials to operate using existing barcode ticketing technology together with location services
i.e. GPS, through a smartphone application. This will identify the passenger's departure station and they ‘
check-in’ in-app to generate a mobile barcode that can be scanned at gatelines or on the train. Options to
end the journey could include barcode scan-out at existing gatelines; GPS identifying the exit station,
confirmed by an in-app ‘check-out’; or GPS alone. The customer will then be charged the best fare for their
journey.
The trials will operate in urban geographical areas without existing or planned contactless card or
smartcard-based PAYG schemes.
Interested parties are invited to participate in the tender process through RDG’s eProcurement system,
where they can access the full tender documentation and submit their proposals. For more details and to
