The UK research aircraft, the FAAM BAe-146, does not offer ideal sampling for aerosol instrumentation via currently fitted inlet technologies. This is recognised as a barrier to being able to undertake the best possible aerosol measurements. It has been an imperative of the UK airborne aerosol community to improve the aerosol inlets on the FAAM BAe-146 aircraft. This staged project will assess the community need, design and manufacture the inlets, support installation and provide any training necessary. There will be a requirement to consider up to 3 different inlet designs, with the project board deciding which options and how many inlets will be supplied based on the recommendations and costs from potential suppliers. The project will be broken down into a series of work packages. WP1 will be a feasibility study, WP2 will be the design of Aerosol inlets and accessories, and WP3 will be the production. Additional WP can be added after the feasibility study, if required, such as training and supporting installation. WP2 and WP3 will only be awarded depending on the outcome of WP1; The University reserves the right to not award any WP after WP1.
