This project seeks to conserve and repair the Grade II* listed Ruined Arch returning it to a sound state of repair closer to the original design intentions of Sir William Chambers. Constructed in 1760, the Ruined Arch was designed by Sir William Chambers primarily as deliberately dilapidated folly within the landscape. However, when originally constructed it did function as a carriageway over what is now Kew Road. Constructed of brick, Bath stone and render/stucco the structure is now in a more ruinous state than originally intended. The stonework and render are decayed and have been poorly patched with cementitious mortar, large areas of brickwork require repointing and rebuilding and there is concern regarding the stability of the retaining walls/embankments and high-level masonry, which has become dislodged by extensive vegetation growth. The works are restricted to the Ruined Arch and will not affect any other areas of the site. It is hoped that the route through the arch can remain open for most of the programme, however there will be periods when access will have to be restricted. The outline scope of works comprises. Conserve and repair all brickwork. Conserver and repair all stonework, including carved details. Conserve, repair and reinstate render and stucco work as necessary Remove all vegetation and consider appropriate replanting to improve long term maintenance Complete structural repairs to the arch, retaining walls and earth embankments. Improve the surface finishing around and through the arch. Inspect, catalogue, clean and repair architectural fragments that adorn the structure Improve surface water management and drainage. Additional information: The contracting authority considers that this contract may be suitable for economic operators that are small or medium enterprises (SMEs). However, any selection of tenderers will be based solely on the criteria set out for the procurement.
