Smoking remains the leading preventable cause of premature mortality and ill health with the biggest inequality impact amongst people with severe mental illnesses (SMI). Smokers with SMI are more nicotine dependent, more likely to develop smoking-related illnesses and die, on average, 10 - 20 years earlier than the general population. Smoking has been identified as the single largest cause of the life expectancy gap within this group with estimates of 50% of deaths in people with SMI attributable to smoking (Callaghan, 2014). The Stop Smoking Service for people with Serious Mental Illness will be a pilot service for 18 months. This is expected to be an innovative service providing a range of interventions to maximise opportunity for people with SMI to either quit smoking or reduce the number of cigarettes smoked. We recognise that one provider may not be able to provide all the elements required for this service as detailed below and we therefore encourage collaboration between providers especially where one provider has more experience in one area such as group support sessions for people with SMI. We would therefore like to hear from potential providers interested in exploring a new approach to delivering this service either on their own or in conjunction with another provider. Suitably qualified providers are invited to express an interest by completing the attached market test form and returning to Paul Cosen via paul.cosen@havering.gov.uk by midday on 28th August 2023. This is not an invitation to tender. However, we are planning to host an online market engagement event during September, date to be confirmed. Please advise us of your interest to attend and we will send an invite. Please see attached document "Stop Smoking Service Information" for what the service will provide and outcomes to be measured.
